about jamie e. harrell, attorney & owner of harrell law llc

a small town family lawyer

Jamie was raised in Avon, Indiana, and graduated from Avon High School. She attended Indiana University working as an administrative assistant for the Graduate Program at the Department of Political Science in Bloomington.  While obtaining her B.A. in Political Science, she was selected for the Governor's Summer Internship (GSI) program and interned with the State Board of Accounts.  During and after college, Jamie waited tables at Steak 'n Shake in Plainfield and then began working at a law office in Brownsburg, attending law school at night while handling a diverse array of tasks for attorneys during the day as a paralegal, ranging from research to document preparation to liaising with clients.

During law school, Jamie was honored to be selected to serve with the I.U. McKinney Dean's Tutorial Society, which provides academic support to 1L students, featuring peer-to-peer mentoring and tutoring from academically distinguished upper-level students. She can proudly say she elected to take Income Tax from Professor Lawrence A. Jegen III but got a B.  She earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, graduating in 2011.

Since graduating law school, Jamie has gained a majority of her experience in elder law and estate planning, including wills and trusts, as well as probate and trust administration.  She has a strong background in real estate law and secured transactions/banking law, including mortgage foreclosures, small claims and civil collection proceedings, and has appeared in federal U.S. Bankruptcy Court for adversary proceedings on behalf of creditors.  Jamie is proud to have represented several local central Indiana banks and trust companies in complex civil and probate litigation, and previously served as a Mortgage Foreclosure Settlement Conference Facilitator for Hendricks County courts.

Her specific experience includes, but is not limited to, issues of small estate administration and probate estate administration, trust administration, business formation/incorporation and administration/management, guardianship law and protective proceedings, and family law.  While Jamie no longer practices in the areas of divorce, custody, child support, or parenting time, she does advise individuals regarding specific family and property law related-matters including premarital and postmarital agreements.  She represents families in stepparent and grandparent adoptions.  Jamie advises regarding disabilities and special needs including special needs trust (SNT) formation and administration, regarding long-term care and elder law matters including healthcare planning, powers of attorney, and advanced directives.

Jamie also handles general civil litigation ranging from quiet title actions to name and gender marker changes to landlord/tenant cases and evictions. She spends most of her days meeting with folks and preparing inventories and accountings for estates, trusts, and guardianships.  While she provides general tax-related advice relating to all those matters, but she is not a tax expert. Jamie has been excited to learn more about farm management and administration, land stewardship and leasing, and other agriculture and agribusiness-related areas as she continues to grow in her practice based in Hendricks County but serving Boone, Putnam, Morgan, and other surrounding counties.

When not practicing law, Jamie enjoys spending time with family and pets, playing golf, and watching girls' softball.  She eats far too many tacos and posts her favorite outfits on TikTok.

Words To Live By:

“Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.”
